Switching to alternative fuels is a key strategy in a collective effort to preserve and improve the environment for today, and for future generations. In this process, hydrogen has emerged as a leading candidate for clean combustion thanks to its high energy content.
As the world grapples with the pressing need to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change, the exploration and adoption of hydrogen fuel technologies have become more critical than ever.
At Delphi, a brand of PHINIA Inc., we are preparing for a greener future. Already, we have integrated hydrogen solutions into our aftermarket products.
Pioneering hydrogen solutions in the aftermarket
Delphi is actively researching sustainable aftermarket solutions for fuels like hydrogen to support workshops in servicing the low emission vehicles already on our roads, ultimately continuing the mission to reduce carbon emissions for a cleaner world.
Why? Because, at heart, Delphi is about innovation for good.
Recognizing hydrogen's potential, we have extended our aftermarket product range and services beyond conventional internal combustion engine (ICE), hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), and electric vehicle (EV) components.
We have embraced fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs).
What are FCEVs?
FCEVs are a leap forward in automotive technology. They use hydrogen to generate electricity through a fuel cell. This process powers the vehicle's electric motor, producing only water vapour as a byproduct. Vehicle models such as the Toyota Mirai and Hyundai Nexo prove the viability and growing acceptance of FCEVs.
Delphi supports these advancements through a dedicated range of 32 replacement component part numbers across braking, steering and suspension, vehicle electronics, and thermal management systems.
Empowering the aftermarket with hydrogen expertise
Delphi's commitment to hydrogen technologies extends into our comprehensive workshop solutions. This includes specialised training and diagnostics support for hydrogen vehicles.
Hydrogen training programs
Delphi offers two levels of hydrogen training in our flagship UK training facility for technicians working with FCEVs:
Level 1 (TR-UK-HY1)
An introductory course focusing on safety protocols, emission reduction, FCEV components, hydrogen combustion, fuel cells, and refuelling procedures
Level 2 (TR-UK-HY2)
A more advanced curriculum that covers enhanced safety measures, system purging, leak detection using nitrogen, and maintenance of the hydrogen internal combustion engine (H2ICE) system
These training modules prepare technicians for the unique demands of FCEVs and highlight the important role of safety and environmental stewardship in the hydrogen economy.
Diagnostics coverage
Delphi's diagnostics solutions support fault code identification, live data analysis, and specialised modes for the Toyota Mirai and other hydrogen vehicles, empowering in-depth diagnostics.
This coverage ensures workshops can confidently address the sophisticated needs of FCEVs while maintaining the high standards of performance and safety vehicles and customers demand.
Chasing a greener tomorrow
The automotive industry is shifting towards sustainable fuel sources, and Delphi is taking meaningful strides forward with its hydrogen solutions in the aftermarket.
We now offer advanced parts, specialised training, and diagnostics for hydrogen-based vehicles. This not only supports the environmental goal of reducing carbon emissions but also empowers the automotive aftermarket sector with the tools and knowledge to thrive in an era of sustainable mobility.
Our holistic approach delivers vehicle performance and safety, brings tangible value to consumers, and contributes to the broader environmental aspirations of our society.
We are steering the automotive aftermarket towards a cleaner, more sustainable horizon. The goal: to protect and preserve what we have for generations to come.
