Resource Highlights
Here we’re taking a look at replacing an air filter on a vehicle – as an example, a Mercedes Vito.
The key difference with this vehicle is that in addition to changing the filter, it also needs to be programmed. This is to ensure the vehicle continues to monitor air flow rates and emissions correctly.
Matt, our Delphi expert, takes you step by step through the process, showing you:
- How to access the filter
- How to replace it
- How to programme it using a Delphi system
What does an air filter do?
The air filter protects the engine from dirt, debris or particles that can cause harm.
How often should an air filter be changed?
Your air filter should be changed according to the manufacturer’s schedule. It’s designed to effectively protect your engine only for a certain amount of time — usually between 15,000 and 30,000 miles.
Why does an air filter need to be programmed?
Programming is needed increasingly because of EURO 6 emission standards. As the vehicle is used, it will learn the air flow rates of the existing filter. When we replace it, that value will change immediately. This could have a knock-on effect for other emission control systems such as EGR, which relies heavily on the air flow values.
